Emily Remler at Bach Dancing & Dynamite Society, Half Moon Bay CA 1984; 2010 Brian McMillen
Graduating from Berklee at age 18, Emily Remler spent some time in New Orleans learning how to be a working musician, took lessons from her mentor Herb Ellis, married Jamaican pianist Monty Alexander, and filled the 1980s with some outstanding recordings and live performances. She was an incredibly talented and hard-working guitarist.
When asked how she’d like to be remembered, Emily said: “Good compositions, memorable guitar playing and my contributions as a woman in music….but the music is everything, and it has nothing to do with politics or the women’s liberation movement. You have to rise above it all by being good. You don’t get angry, you don’t get bitter, and you don’t get feminist about the situation. You get so damn good that they’ll forget about all that garbage.”
