Thelonious Monk   1917-1982

All you need to know about Thelonious Monk can be found in Robin D. G. Kelley’s exhaustive biography Thelonious Monk:  The Life and Times of an American Original.  I’ll just say here that he was a genius, and his music makes me feel whole, somehow…

“I say, play your own way. Don’t play what the public wants. You play what you want and let the public pick up on what you’re doing, even if it does take them fifteen, twenty years. ” —  Thelonious Monk

Oscar Brown Jr.  1926-2005

Singer, songwriter, playwright, poet, civil rights activist, and actor, a creative genius who wrote at least 1,000 songs, recorded a dozen albums, wrote musical plays by the score and authored a book:  What It Is — Poems and Opinions of Oscar Brown Jr.

“He enlivened the music.  He painted pictures with his songs, poetry. He could really deliver a lyric.”  — daughter Maggie Brown
