Jazz Birthdays: Roy and Ray | October 16, 2012

Roy Hargrove  1969

A trumpeter whose raw talent was recognized early on by none other than Wynton Marsalis, Hargrove has led a quartet and a big band, collaborated with jazz, soul and pop acts, and recorded in Cuba with the likes of Chucho Valdes.

“Let the music speak for itself.”  –Roy Hargrove

Ray Anderson  1952

“Exciting…”  “…compellingly original…”  “…boisterous…”  doesn’t even begin to cover Ray Anderson’s enthusiasm for the trombone.   Born in Chicago, based in New York, Ray also holds an enduring love for the city of New Orléans and its music.

“I insist on having fun when I play and if the band enjoys itself, the audience does, too. But music contains every feeling and emotion; it’s ultimately an expression of love.”  –Ray Anderson
