Jazz Birthday: Ray Nance | December 10, 2012

Ray Nance  1913-1976

Best known for his long association with Duke Ellington’s orchestras (1940-1963), the multi-talented Ray Nance sang, danced and played violin and trumpet.  He was acknowledged as one of the finest jazz violinists of the 1940s, and was a distinctive trumpeter, even though self-taught on the instrument.  His nickname, appropriately enough, was “Floorshow.”

“Doo wha, doo wha, doo wha, doo wha, yeah!”–Ray Nance
