Jazz Birthdays: Anita O’Day and Rhythm is Our Business | December 18, 2012

On this day in 1934, Jimmie Lunceford recorded his orchestra’s theme song:

Anita O’Day  1919-2006

A distinctive voice, loads of stage presence, a flair for fashion, and the ability to rise above “chick singer” status by asserting her musicianship, Anita O’Day was one of a kind.  Her autobiography High Times, Hard Times is as gritty as her life, and the film Anita O’Day: The Life of a Jazz Singer doesn’t hold much back, either.

“Rhythm is my thing…sustained notes are boring.”  –Anita O’Day
