Gene Krupa 1909 – 1973
Young and handsome, an energetic and flamboyant performer, Gene Krupa was best known for his time with the Benny Goodman Orchestra and the famous drum solo on “Sing, Sing, Sing.” A Hollywood favorite, he appeared in movies with his own bands. Krupa introduced innovations in the drumkit, most notably tuneable tom-toms, and he is generally considered as the man who made drums a solo instrument.
“I’m happy that I succeeded in doing two things: I made the drummer a high- priced guy, and I was able to draw more people to jazz.”
