Blues Birthday: Mr. B (Mark Braun) | February 19, 2013

Mr. B now does it on wheels

Mark Braun  1957

Blues and boogie-woogie pianist Mark Lincoln Braun learned his craft first-hand from masters like Little Brother Montgomery, Boogie Woogie Red, and Blind John Davis.  Mr. B is also influenced by a variety of jazz pianists, especially those with strong blues roots such as Ray Bryant and Horace Silver.

Mr. B is the organizer of Ann Arbor’s annual Blues and Boogie Piano Celebration, and he’s the founder of Joybox Express, a band and project designed to raise awareness and funding for groups dedicated to improving the health and well-being of children, especially groups providing children access to arts and athletics programs.

The Joybox Express band has traveled through the state of Michigan via bicycle, hauling their instruments, including the piano, to perform and raise money for charities.  Their next trip is a bit more ambitious:  a 1900-mile journey following the Mississippi River from its headwaters at Lake Itasca, Minnesota all the way down to New Orleans, Louisiana.  The adventure begins September 1, 2013.
