Trombonist, composer and arranger Locksley Wellington “Slide” Hampton started out in his family’s band, worked with Lionel Hampton, Buddy Johnson, Maynard Ferguson, Tadd Dameron and Art Blakey. He formed his own octet in the 1960s, toured with Woody Herman, taught at Harvard and other universities, and led his own nine-trombone ensemble called, appropriately enough, “World of Trombones.”
Slide Hampton plays left-handed trombone, even though he’s not left-handed. That’s just how he learned the instrument. He’s a 2005 NEA Jazz Master, and revered by trombonists throughout the world.
